BUFORD POWERS

With the recent departure of  revered balladeer Tony Bennett from the live music scene, I felt even more encouraged to bring my own grown-up music to the national forefront – music I call “Baritone Love Songs.”  Bennett famously left his heart in San Francisco. But mine was always there.

You see I was born in Oakland, California,  on November 11, 1945, Veterans Day. I grew up in the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area and while pursuing various business ventures, my love of singing the music I always loved grew stronger. And I began to record.

I have an enduring passion for the American art form known as Jazz.  And my music is a Jazz-influenced interpretation of the classic American song book created by writers like Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn,  to name a few of the geniuses who gave America this world-class music.

In the studio, I assembled some of the best musicians in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area with a very bright young producer named Ron Moton. We combined our talents so the world can enjoy once more fresh interpretations of  timeless music that reflects my own persona.

I'm a Romantic…who has always loved songs that tell a story of life and love that most of us can identify with…songs with the poetry of love and sadness…songs with the joys of life lyrically and melodiously integrated with sound and harmony.

I'm a Passionate Person…who falls in love too easily, especially with music that complements the lyric with sensitivity… and harmonics that support the lyrical story.

I am one of the last of a generation that produced the vocalists who inspired men and women to hold each other in their arms… and dance across the floor in loving bliss.

I grew to love this music even more when I saw Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra on television.  These great storytellers, along with the inimitable Ms. Nancy Wilson, inspired my ability to phrase and style a lyric to give it special meaning. I saw other great vocalists with that same talent, Lou Rawls and Etta James, when both were on the fabled ‘Chittlin’ Circuit.’

At 16, I was at the 1961 Monterey Jazz Festival when the fabled Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra was the house band. And yes, I watched Lawrence Welk too… expanding my exposure to the vast musical universe that informs my own sensibilities …and repertoire…today.

So come and enjoy the ride with me as we travel back into the era where beautiful music warmed and comforted…and lyrics told heartfelt stories…satisfying our yearning for the nostalgia  that fills our souls today.

BRIAN MARTIN

Answering the call to music ministry early in his faith, Brian released his debut album, Lifter Of My Head, in 2003. The project, which premiered to a sold-out crowd at London’s Fairfield Halls, earned him a GEM (Gospel Entertainment Music) Award in 2005. That same year, Brian received the prestigious honor of joining fellow award nominees at the UK House of Commons to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela.

One of Brian’s most compelling compositions is the powerful anthem D.I.P. (Deliverance in Praise), a “Live Recording” spiritually charged call to worship inspired by 2 Chronicles 20. Its message: “Deliverance comes when you praise / The battle is won when you praise / All your trials you’ll overcome / When you praise Him” has touched hearts across continents, denominations, and generations.

New Music, New Mission

Brian’s third album, The Greatness In You, was recorded live at his home church, Cornerstone Church in Walton-on-Thames, England, and released through NDAMIX/MNRK Music in 2022. Edgar Redmond Hi Res.avif

Born May 8,1928, EDGAR “ED” REDMOND, was a native of Washington, D.C., and started playing the clarinet and saxophone at age 13. He studied composition and arranging at Berklee School of Music, Boston and he was awarded a teaching certification of the Schillinger System of Musical Composition from New York University.  From 1948 to 1959 he served in the armed forces as composer and arranger for army bands. Best known in Los Angeles as a composer, clarinetist, arranger, and orchestrator, Redmond drew from different music genres, including Classical, Baroque, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Gospel, Rock, Latin and the Blues.

He performed his services for numerous recording companies, celebrity artists and groups including Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, The Fifth Dimension, The Ventures, Bill Cosby, Billy Preston, Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Ike and Tina Turner, Johnnie Brown (Laugh-In), Sandy Nelson, Mike Melvoin, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Johnnie Taylor, Donna Summers, Edwin Hawkins with the Oakland Symphony, and Della Reese with the New Orleans Philharmonic.  He even made a number of 30-second commercials for advertising companies.  Currently, there are 26 ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) song titles in the Edgar Redmond Archives (E.R.A) catalog.

Edgar was founder and music director of the jazz group Modern String Ensemble, the author of “Jazz, Strings and The World of Music”, and originator of the proposed program for Community Television Channel 28 KCET “How to Play Modern American Music (Jazz) On Strings”.  At the conclusion of many years of research and experimenting, The Modern String Ensemble arrived at the epitome of modern American music by the practical use of strings playing jazz…and successfully married the beauty of sound of the symphony orchestra with the exhilarating rhythmic feel of jazz.

Steven Riggio, then President of Essar Records stated The Modern String Ensemble is “the greatest benefit to music education, which shows the possibilities of creative string performances through the idiom of Jazz and Modern Popular music.”  As a former member of the Music Educators National Conference and the National Association of Jazz Educators, Redmond was a strong advocate of music education.  In 1970 he conducted clinic sessions at the 12th Annual National School Orchestra Association summer conference held at Elon College, North Carolina, at which four of his own compositions were performed.

Redmond once stated one of his greatest accomplishments was in April 1973 when the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra performed his “Transition in Black” suite dramatizing the climactic phases of the existence of the Afro-American.  According to the Hollywood Reporter in 1973, “Transition in Black” was a pleasant Gershwinesque piece of representational music.

Edgar received his first Film and TV credit in 1961 with the arrangement of the Theme Song for the MGM Movie Horizontal Lieutenant performed by the group The Diamonds.  Other major credits include the 1993 American crime drama film, A Bronx Tale; C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation; The Simpsons; Casino; G.I. JOE: Retalliation and HOUSE, MD.

Although he passed away on August 30, 1984, Edgar’s main goal of pursuing the film industry as a film composer is currently being brought to life by his son Michael Redmond
